Curious?
I had so many different thoughts the last two weeks, I could not filter them into a newsletter.
One day I was wondering about the businesses built only for a season, for a quick trend. Another day I was wondering why we glorify start-up culture? Then I was thinking why I see the keyword visibility everywhere I go. Where do I meet my target group? And who are they really? What is the value — and if I know what value I create, how do I make it clear to the clients? How much we are influenced by the false images and ideas from social media… Why are we so fixated on sales when we don’t even know what we are selling?
All that while navigating towards finally getting ready to officially start my own practice. Filling up the forms, templates, plans…
Running a business or a freelancing career is a serious thing. And I think the fact that we ask ourselves so many questions is a very good sign. Because there is no entrepreneurial thinking without being curious, asking questions, questioning the obvious, changing the perspective.
Curiosity, for example, keeps me looking for events and formats of networking I can finally feel good about. I know already that any sort of big, anonymous events, conferences etc., is a nightmare for me. You can meet me in my garden, talking about artificial intelligence with a gardener from another patch, 2 meters away, while complaining that my cucumbers don’t grow… But to approach a random person in a full room after an AI-related event? I’d rather leave.
Curiosity made me test what Instagram has for me, only to find out it actually doesn’t have much. I don’t want to spend time following the algorithm, trying to fill in the mold. At over 40 I am not that flexible anymore… And it is no fun.
Curiosity makes me still think: where do I meet the people I want to work with? What alternatives do I have to glittery network clubs, where people meet to drink prosecco and celebrate success? Where would I fit in in my hand-knitted sweaters and beloved sneakers? How can I gather likeminded people together with the few things I have in my hands?
Curiosity is one of the main assets for entrepreneurs and freelancers, so often neglected or forgotten. Thought of as useless, a waste of time. While in reality, curiosity helps us find solutions to various problems, helps us stay unique and creative. It is fun. It is that spark that can start something great.
I wish we could all stay curious amid all the not-so-funny and boring activities we have to do to keep our business going. I wish more female entrepreneurs knew that their own curiosity is the first step to building something amazing. And that this is definitely not a waste of time.
